A New Haven At this time in one’s life there are several feelings of loss and sadness that seniors are felling how they are moving away from their independence. So New Haven created the concept of small home like communities that have been executed in several facilities located throughout rural areas in Texas. Lead by Richard Nicholls of Utah, he and his wife Sally opened the first facility. Founded in 2013 in Schertz, Texas, New Haven’s mission is to specialize in Forget-Me-Not caring for our seniors. New Haven offers assisted living in one 16 bed facility and memory care in a second 16 bed secured facility. Their first location in Schertz, Texas outside of San Antonio has been opened 4 years and was acknowledge as the “Best in Senior Living”, by SeniorAdvisor.com in 2015. The second location in Kyle, TX earned its award as “Best in Senior Living” 2016. With overwhelming success New Haven is opening more facilities throughout Texas located in Spring, Tomball, Floresville, Bastrop, and Wylie. They are taking the home like facilities to rural areas to help fill the need of those that need more care. What is assisted living? The Assisted Living Federation of America defines assisted living, “as a long-term care option that combines housing, support services and health care, as needed.” Assisted living is designed for individuals who require assistance and can no longer stay safely in their own home. They are now needing help with everyday activities such as meals, medication management or assistance with bathing, dressing, toileting, and transportation. Assisted living communities provide more personal care services than an independent living retirement community. Until that moment impacts you and now your mom, dad, grandparent or aging friend, it is not an area everyone knows firsthand. You come home to visit your mom and realize that she has not been eating well or you see that she has missed several days of medication or calling because she has fallen again. That is the day you pick up the phone to make the first call to ask questions that you don’t even know yet to ask. As the Regional Director of Admission and Marking, Mrs. Yockey has fielded this call several times in her career. She said, “There are never wrong questions and you cannot ask enough questions when you are dealing with one of your most precious assets in life and need to make sure you are making the right decision as to where your family member is going to be placed.” New Haven Assisted Living and Memory Care facilities consist of two buildings with 16 private rooms in each building. Residents enjoy an array of homelike areas including an open kitchen floorplan like many of our homes now. Also, included in the community is a large living room, dayroom, and sun porch for residents to enjoy visiting with family and friends. New Haven also specializes in Memory Care. Memory care comprises of residents with dementia or some form of Alzheimer’s. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, “1 in 3 seniors dies with or another dementia.” To provide the extra supportive care that is needed in this growing population has brought New Haven Assisted Living and Memory care to the forefront in personalized care giving. At New Haven our residents, who experience progressive illness with cognitive impairment and challenges, still have the right to experience life with opportunities for growth and fulfillment. New Haven is involved in more than its’ direct community. Mrs. Yockey is also proud to be an Ambassador for the Alzheimer’s Association. Her duties have taken her to Washington D.C. to advocate for more funding for research to end this disease. She has met with Members of both the U.S. House and U.S. Senate to discuss with them how their support could make a difference to the future of this disease. She will again be making a trip to the Hill to discuss a $400 million increase for funding that was pending before the 114th Congress for FY17, and will now need action by the 115th Congress to start the New Year with hope and optimism for the millions of Americans living with and affected by this disease. New Haven Assisted Living and Memory Care is small in size but big on its method of care for the seniors in Texas. Keep your eye out they might be taking over more places than Texas.
