This autumn, the England men’s cricket team will return to the Caribbean for an action-packed schedule of ODIs and T20s against the West Indies. The games are set to take place on the beautiful islands of Antigua, Barbados and St Lucia – if you’re a lover of cricket, it’s the place to be!
However, are you aware of some of the more unusual conventions in the region? For example, it’s not a good idea to pack your camo-print clothes or accessories for your holiday. It’s actually illegal to wear the print in this part of the Caribbean, as it’s reserved exclusively for the armed forces!
If you weren’t aware of this law, it might be time to do some research before heading out to enjoy the series. Luckily, the team at Royal Westmoreland, who provide luxury villas in Barbados, have put together some handy tips to help you make the most of your visit to this gorgeous island.
Pack wisely
When preparing your suitcase, leave anything with a camouflage print at home. Camouflage clothing is reserved exclusively for the military in Barbados and St. Lucia. Even kids’ clothes fall under this law, so make sure to double check your little ones’ suitcases if they’re coming to enjoy the series with you.
While you’re at it, don’t forget to pack insect repellent! A warm, tropical climate attracts not only tourists but also mosquitoes. Carry bug spray with you for refreshing dusk and dawn, mosquitoes tend to be less active in the day and especially where there is a breeze; consider using a mosquito net or air conditioning at night, so you can enjoy your stay to the full.
Get to know the locals
One of the highlights of any trip to Barbados is the chance to interact with the friendly locals. English is the language in Barbados and Antigua; St. Lucia has a French Creole background and a Patois is spoke by locals.
Barbados is particularly known for its open friendly locals. Chatting with those who live here year-round will give you an insider’s perspective on their opinion on the cricket, the best spots to visit, whether you’re in search of a lively nightlife scene, hidden beaches, or the most authentic island cuisine.
Travel smart
Navigating the island’s twisty roads can be tricky, especially if you’re unfamiliar with driving on the left. To keep your trip stress-free, go slowly! It is fun to get out and about and get lost on the island, the same friendly locals will redirect you or stop at one of the many ‘Rum Shacks’ and enjoy being a little bit lost! There are always taxis if you choose. They offer a convenient and comfortable way to get around, whether you’re heading to the cricket ground or exploring the island’s many attractions. Alternatively, you can use the local bus service, which is affordable and a bit of an adventure all in itself, with lively music and plenty of chat while you see more of Barbados.
Respect local customs
Barbados takes pride in its conservative approach to beachwear. While it may be tempting to sunbathe topless to avoid tan lines, it’s important to note that doing so is not permitted on the island. Keeping modesty in mind will ensure you stay on the right side of local customs.
Public displays of affection (PDA) are also rare in the Caribbean. Though Barbados is becoming more open-minded, it’s still considered polite to keep romantic gestures private, especially in public places. This is particularly important for same-sex couples, as while progress is being made, some conservative attitudes still exist in parts of the region. It is considered polite to greet people when you enter a room – even if they are strangers to you. A simple Good Morning will go a long way to show respect of the other people in a space.
Look but don’t touch
As you explore Barbados’ natural beauty, you’ll likely come across a curious fruit that looks like a small apple. This is the manchineel fruit and, despite its innocent appearance, it’s extremely toxic. Both the fruit and the sap from the tree can cause severe skin irritation and other health issues, so it’s best to admire from a distance. Being caught under the tree in the rain will also leave you with skin irritation. They are labelled on most beaches to let you know.
Another important tip is to be mindful of the island’s wildlife, especially sea turtles. These majestic creatures are a protected species in Barbados. If you’re lucky enough to spot them, be sure to observe them without interfering.
Must-see attractions
Barbados offers much more than cricket! One hidden gem you won’t want to miss is the stunning Animal Flower Cave. Located on the island’s northern coast, this natural wonder is a feast for the eyes with its sea views and crystal-clear waters.
Explore the underground caves or take in the amazing views of the island from the cliff tops. Afterwards, you can enjoy a delicious meal at the adjoining restaurant, making it a perfect day trip for cricket fans and nature lovers alike.
Capture the memories
Barbados is one of the most picturesque islands in the world. Don’t forget to snap some perfect photos with your phone – or perhaps a Polaroid camera – to help you remember not only a fantastic cricket season, but the holiday of a lifetime.
By keeping these helpful tips in mind, you’re sure to have a smooth, fun, and memorable experience during your visit to Barbados. From stunning scenery and fascinating wildlife to the thrill of cricket, the island has something for everyone. Enjoy the cricket season and embrace everything this paradise has to offer!
